“Walking on Sunshine” is a song written by Kimberley Rew for Katrina and the Waves‘ 1983 eponymous debut full-length album. The upbeat song sung by Katrina Leskanich, was re-recorded in 1985 and went on to reach #2 in Ireland, #3 in Canada, #4 in Australia, #9 in the US, and #8 in the UK. It was the Waves’ first US top 40 hit, and their biggest success in the UK at the time.
According to a former employee of EMI, “Walking on Sunshine was the crown jewel in EMI’s catalog,” and that it was one of EMI’s biggest earners from advertisers.
In a 2020 interview, Leskanich said that she believes the song is going to outlive her.
